{"id":43921,"date":"2025-10-01T10:59:58","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T17:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/evergreensmallbusiness.com\/?p=43921"},"modified":"2025-08-12T11:13:21","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T18:13:21","slug":"trump-savings-accounts-free-money-from-the-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/evergreensmallbusiness.com\/trump-savings-accounts-free-money-from-the-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Savings Accounts &#8211; Free Money from the Government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/evergreensmallbusiness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/iStock-478548570.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-44080\" src=\"https:\/\/evergreensmallbusiness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/iStock-478548570-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Trump Savings Accounts provide a slick way for parents to save money for kids.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/evergreensmallbusiness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/iStock-478548570-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/evergreensmallbusiness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/iStock-478548570-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/evergreensmallbusiness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/iStock-478548570-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/evergreensmallbusiness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/iStock-478548570.jpg 1254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Child focused tax benefits have taken on many forms over the years.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve had child tax credits, dependent care credits, education credits, 529 accounts, UTMA &amp; UGMA accounts, and more.\u00a0 But, the recently passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/1\/text\/enr?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB)<\/a> introduced something completely new: a federally seeded, tax deferred savings product for children known as Trump Savings Accounts.<\/p>\n<p>This is a big deal that parents, grand parents, legal guardians, and even employers should pay attention to.\u00a0 The federal government is giving $1,000 to eligible new born babies.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t a tax credit, a tax deduction, or anything else.\u00a0 It is actual cash the government deposits into a bank account.\u00a0 And that is just the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll unpack what these new Trump Savings Accounts are, who qualifies, how to maximize contributions, and what they can be used for. We&#8217;ll also compare these to other\u00a0 accounts designed for children and see how they differ from what is already available.<\/p>\n<h3>What is a Trump Savings Account?<\/h3>\n<p>A Trump Savings Accounts is a tax-deferred custodial account that is structured like a Roth IRA.\u00a0 Qualifying children will receive a seed deposit of <strong>$1,000<\/strong> from the federal government, beginning 1\/1\/2026.<\/p>\n<p>To be absolutely clear, this is <strong>FREE<\/strong> money from the government! To qualify,\u00a0 a child only needs to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be a United States Citizen<\/li>\n<li>Be born between 1\/1\/2025 and 12\/31\/2028<\/li>\n<li>Have a Social Security number<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No income limits for the parents or guardians exist. Every single qualifying child receives the seed deposit.\u00a0 However, parents and guardians can make additional deposits into the account as well.\u00a0 Lets dig into the details.<\/p>\n<h3>Contribution Rules and Limits<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to the government seed money, parents, relatives, friends, and even employers can make contributions into the savings account until the child reaches age 18.<\/p>\n<p>The annual contribution limit is <strong>$5,000<\/strong>\/child, indexed for inflation in future years.\u00a0 Employer&#8217;s can also contribute up to <strong>$2,500<\/strong> per child, which counts towards the $5,000 contribution cap.\u00a0 Ignoring the inflation adjustments, it&#8217;s possible for a child to have $90,000 deposited into their account by the time they reach 18!\u00a0 That is serious money.<\/p>\n<p>Contributions aren&#8217;t tax-deductible for the donor and aren\u2019t treated as income to the child.\u00a0 The money grows tax deferred, however, until the child starts withdrawing the funds.<\/p>\n<p>The IRS determines the tax rate on a distribution based on how the recipient uses the funds.\u00a0 <strong>The tax rate is the same as long term capital gains tax rates on qualified withdrawals.\u00a0<\/strong> A qualified withdrawal includes the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Education, including tuition, supplies, &amp; room and board.<\/li>\n<li>Expanded definition of education to include certified trade and vocational programs<\/li>\n<li>First time home purchase<\/li>\n<li>Starting a business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the recipient uses the money for anything else before turning 59\u00bd, they must pay ordinary income taxes and a 10% penalty on the amount withdrawn. These are the same consequences as taking a nonqualified distribution from a retirement account.<\/p>\n<h3>Account Investment Vehicles<\/h3>\n<p>The money must be invested within specific eligible investments as detailed in the OBBB. Eligible investment means any mutual fund or exchange traded fund which:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tracks the returns of a qualified index<\/li>\n<li>Does not use leverage<\/li>\n<li>Does not have annual fees and expenses of more than 0.1% of the balance of the investment fund<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The term &#8220;qualified index&#8221; means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The S&amp;P 500 market index, or<\/li>\n<li>Any other index which is\n<ul>\n<li>comprised of equity investments in primarily United States companies, and<\/li>\n<li>for which regulated futures contracts are traded on a qualified board or exchange<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So how do you open an account?<\/p>\n<h3>Opening a Trump Savings Account<\/h3>\n<p>First, as previously discussed, you must have a qualifying child born between 1\/1\/2025 &#8211; 12\/31\/2028 to open an account.\u00a0 If qualified, there are two ways to establish an account:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Eligible custodians can manually open accounts after 12\/31\/2025 with an authorized financial institution.<\/li>\n<li>If no eligible custodian establishes an account on behalf of a qualified child within 12 months of the child&#8217;s date of birth, the Secretary of Treasury shall cause an account to be opened in the name of such child and held by a designated institutional custodian.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The treasury hasn&#8217;t issued guidance or an approved list of authorized financial institutions at the time of this writing.\u00a0 But most likely, a majority of the major financial institutions (Fidelity, Vanguard, Ascensus, JP Morgan Chase etc.) will support the accounts.<\/p>\n<h3>Trump Savings Account Alternatives<\/h3>\n<p>Now let\u2019s see how Trump Savings Accounts stack up against more familiar options like 529 plans and custodial accounts, and explore which might be the best fit for your financial goals.<\/p>\n<p>As compared to Trump Savings accounts, Section 529 plans<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are designed to help families save for education-related expenses<\/li>\n<li>Contributions are not federally deductible but are deductible in some states<\/li>\n<li>No contribution limits and considered as gifts to minor<\/li>\n<li>Can change beneficiary<\/li>\n<li>Funds grow inside of the account tax free<\/li>\n<li>Qualified withdrawals are not taxed, if used to pay for\n<ul>\n<li>College tuition and fees<\/li>\n<li>K-12 tuition<\/li>\n<li>Room and board<\/li>\n<li>Books, supplies, and required technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Non-qualified distributions are taxed at ordinary rates and subject to a 10% penalty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A Section 529 plan has the advantage over a\u00a0 Trump Savings Account <em>IF <\/em>the funds are used for college expenses. If flexibility is a priority, the advantage goes to the Trump Savings Account.<\/p>\n<p>As compared to Trump Savings accounts, custodial Accounts (UTMA, UGMA)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are designed to allow an adult custodian to manage assets of a minor child<\/li>\n<li>Contributions are not federally or state deductible<\/li>\n<li>No contribution limits and considered as gifts to minor<\/li>\n<li>Cannot change beneficiary<\/li>\n<li>Funds can be used for anything that benefits the child<\/li>\n<li>No tax shelter treatment, income is subject to kiddie tax annually<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A custodial account has the advantage over a Trump Savings Account when spending flexibility is the priority.\u00a0 However, there is little to no tax advantage like a Trump Savings Account provides.\u00a0 Verdict?\u00a0 Max out Trump Savings Account contributions first, fund a custodian account second.<\/p>\n<h3>Are Trump Savings Accounts a Good Deal?<\/h3>\n<article class=\"text-token-text-primary w-full focus:outline-none scroll-mt-[calc(var(--header-height)+min(200px,max(70px,20svh)))]\" dir=\"auto\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-turn-id=\"request-WEB:fc7f129e-ba44-479d-abfa-16a652f795e8-6\" data-testid=\"conversation-turn-14\" data-scroll-anchor=\"true\" data-turn=\"assistant\">\n<div class=\"text-base my-auto mx-auto pb-10 [--thread-content-margin:--spacing(4)] @[37rem]:[--thread-content-margin:--spacing(6)] @[72rem]:[--thread-content-margin:--spacing(16)] px-(--thread-content-margin)\">\n<div class=\"[--thread-content-max-width:32rem] @[34rem]:[--thread-content-max-width:40rem] @[64rem]:[--thread-content-max-width:48rem] mx-auto max-w-(--thread-content-max-width) flex-1 group\/turn-messages focus-visible:outline-hidden relative flex w-full min-w-0 flex-col agent-turn\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n<div class=\"flex max-w-full flex-col grow\">\n<div class=\"min-h-8 text-message relative flex w-full flex-col items-end gap-2 text-start break-words whitespace-normal [.text-message+&amp;]:mt-5\" dir=\"auto\" data-message-author-role=\"assistant\" data-message-id=\"05ea4d00-9591-4aab-bc12-94c6ad05b4f5\" data-message-model-slug=\"gpt-4o\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-col gap-1 empty:hidden first:pt-[3px]\">\n<div class=\"markdown prose dark:prose-invert w-full break-words light markdown-new-styling\">\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"630\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">For eligible families (those with children born between 2025 and 2028) they present a rare opportunity: a $1,000 head start, tax-deferred investment growth, and potential employer contributions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"630\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">While they don&#8217;t replace the role of Section 529s for education savings or offer the flexibility of UGMA\/UTMA custodial accounts, they fill a new niche by helping families build long-term wealth for their children with minimal upfront cost.
