I’ve looked and, sorry, I can’t find it. It dawns on me that the kerfuffle may be more than just a “few years ago.”…

Do you have a reference for the CPA case you mentioned?

Hi Rick,

First, thanks for taking time to comment and post a relevant link.

Second, keeping in mind the general nature of the primer, except as noted in the next point, I don’t see where the posted general information is inaccurate. Generalized? Yes. But inaccurate? Hmmm.

Third, if we’re talking about California’s position that California can tax out-of-state businesses because they have California customers, I simply disagree with that. I know the FTB thinks it can tax someone in another state because they have a customer in California… absolutely I understand that. But I don’t think that’ll fly.

A few years ago–and you may know this–California decided that it could regulate CPAs in other states if they had customers in California. I expect this reach to end the same way that one did.

Steve

California updated its definition of “doing business” as of January 1, 2011. Reference: https://www.ftb.ca.gov/businesses/New_Rules_for_Doing_Business_in_California.shtml
